On Sunday night, Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner, were murdered in their Los Angeles home. Earlier today, their son Nick was arrested and charged with their murder. Reiner directed some of the most memorable films of the ‘80s and ‘90s. From “This Is Spinal Tap,” which is arguably one of the funniest movies ever made, and “Stand By Me,” to “When Harry Met Sally” and “A Few Good Men.” Before directing, he worked as an actor whose first big break came in the hit sitcom “All In The Family” (when Reiner occasionally retweeted me, I would always respond “meathead,” the nickname given to him by the show’s lead character, “Archie Bunker.”) Reiner was also a longtime liberal activist. In the late ‘90s, he spearheaded a ballot initiative in California to increase cigarette taxes and use the money to support early childhood development programs. And Reiner was an outspoken critic of President Trump … which is what led to this absolutely deranged and repulsive post from the president of the United States. What can you even say anymore? In the president’s telling, the Reiners’ tragic demise is a direct result of his dislike of Donald Trump. This post is beyond psychotic, but it’s also completely emblematic of Trump’s sociopathy and narcissism. For Trump, every event, no matter how tragic or disconnected from him, is filtered through the prism of his ego. Literally, everything is about him. Trump’s comments are so disgusting that even on Truth Social, Trump’s social media site, many commentators were outraged. ![]() Froma policy standpoint, there are so many awful things that Trump has done in the past nearly 11 months as president, but we should not lose sight of how his very presence in the nation’s politics debases this country on a near-daily basis. Trump is a man devoid of empathy, oblivious to basic social norms, and racist and hateful to his core, who spends most of his time marinating in his unending grievances and grudges. He cares not one whit about anyone but himself and simply cannot consider the suffering and pain of others. His horrific public utterances are a direct by-product of his pathologies. His statement about Rob and Michelle Reiner is horrific but consistent with a man who, on Friday, used a ceremony honoring the 1980 US Olympic hockey team to once again bash Somali-Americans. He makes horrible and offensive statements practically every day that dishonor our traditions and values as a nation. Most are not news and rarely get the attention of Americans. Or if they are quickly forgotten, because, after all, who can keep up? His response to the Reiners' death is just one more example of how uniquely awful a person he is — and surely before all is said and done, there will be many, many more. This latest outrage will, like all the others, quickly be filed away, replaced by yet another fleeting one, and so on and so on. It’s beyond mortifying that we as Americans not only have him as our president but that so many millions of our fellow citizens, with eyes wide open, chose this path. Speaking of Horrible Members of the Trump Administration The murder of Rob and Michelle Reiner is only one of the horrific tragedies in America this weekend. A mass shooting at Brown University left two people dead. The vice president, JD Vance, chose to honor one of them. Below is a picture of the other victim: Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov You want to take a wild guess as to why Vance didn’t feel the need to mention him in his Twitter post. In some respects, Vance’s post is as bad as Trump’s. Unlike the president, Vance is not a narcissistic sociopath. Instead, he is a craven and cynical politician who can’t bother to utter the name of a non-white, Muslim victim of a mass shooting. Even though his wife is the daughter of Indian immigrants and his children are mixed race, he willingly traffics in racial animosity, or at the very least excludes those who are non-white from his statements of sympathy. Remember that Vance used to be a critic of Donald Trump. He once even compared him to Hitler. But, of course, his political ambitions demanded that he forget all that and instead act as a loyal servant to the president’s sociopathy — and he’s willingly jumped in MAGA’s toxic swamp. Trump is a terrible person, but he’s also deeply damaged, and he says and does terrible things because he suffers from profound mental illness. Vance does horrible things with eyes wide open, fully aware of how awful they are. He’s actually worse than Trump, as are all the people around the president who enable and defend his behavior.
